Hypnotherapy and Menopause

Hypnotherapy and  Menopause

Many women may be sceptical about the use of hypnosis as a treatment for the symptoms of menopause however a panel of experts commissioned by the North American Menopause Society concluded recently that there was solid evidence that both hypnotherapy and CBT were beneficial. Although how hypnosis may reduce the severity of symptoms such as hot flushes is not clear the researchers suggested that is may be due to the fact that hypnosis can boost the function of the parasympathetic nervous system which plays a part in hot flushes.

In the run up to the menopause oestrogen levels drop this eventually causes the ovaries to stop producing an egg every month, sleep can become disturbed, mood swings are common, feelings of anxiety can suddenly appear, confidence can plummet, worries about aging can surface affecting self esteem.  Physical symptoms include hot flushes, night sweats, vaginal dryness and loss of libido.

Interestingly in Japan they do not have word for menopause because older women are highly valued and the menopause is seen as simply a transition not an illness or a condition.

A course of hypnotherapy sessions with Hypnosis and CBT will help with hot flushes, anxiety, mood swings, self esteem and confidence levels. Contrary to popular belief there is little evidence that vitamins, or popular herbal remedies such as black cohosh, evening primrose oil, ginseng, yoga or acupuncture give any relief at all. In the North America study Hypnotherapy with hypnosis was uniquely effective in alleviating the symptoms of menopause.
